Kanrocksas Video

Our good friends RL and Brent are featured in this video (we make some face time too).  It was a fun day getting to play two sets of music and then watching some killer bands.  I was blown away by A Perfect Circle, I’m not a huge fan but they kill live.  The Black Keys and Muse were fun to watch as well although Muse was a bit over the top for my taste… does anyone really need a lazer keytar, light up sun glasses and pink pants? (see below)

Special thanks to Chris Haghirian and everything he is doing for the Kansas City Music scene….

FREE SHOW 8.18.11 at the Union

We are very excited that our good friends Velorio are coming all the way from Bakersfield, CA to play with us here in Kansas City. They are one of the few like minded bands that we’ve met in our travels.  They are a blast and I’m sure you’ll love them too.

The show starts at 11 pm and is free! It will only cost you a few hours of lost sleep.

exactly one year ago

So I stumbled upon this video as I was compiling old clips of the band and it brought back a wave of memories.  The tour we did with Alejandro Marcovich was insane!

We were nervous as hell to play with Alejandro.  Although familiar with Caifanes, we all had to learn 16 songs in two weeks while on tour in California.  When Alejandro arrived, we didn’t get a chance to rehearse.  The night of our first rehearsal Alejandro left the practice early because he was feeling ill.  We were freaking out.  We thought, ‘he hates us, think we suck at his songs!  fuck!’  That definitely wasn’t the case, Alejandro was terribly ill.  He suffered a seizure (the first of his entire life) after we dropped him off at his hotel that night.   During the seizure, he busted his face on the hotel lobby, bit through his tongue and received the news that he may have a brain tumor.  You can see his black eye in the video below.

Amazingly, Alejandro chose to play the shows in spite of his ailments and even though we hadn’t rehearsed. iEl es un rockero de verdad!   We were so stressed out to play with a ‘superstar’ unrehearsed, having spent the week in and out of the hospital visiting Alejandro as opposed rehearsing.   I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, I developed a terrible cough (later went to the doctor and realized I’d been singing through Bronchitis), all the while receiving worried calls form Alejandro’s wife, worried show promoters and on three hours of sleep headed to Chicago.

After Alejandro returned to Mexico he found out the frightening news that he had a brain tumor and it needed surgery.  The doctors miraculously removed the tumor without any complications.  I spoke to him after the surgery and he was incredibly grateful for his good fortune.  His illness brought him back in contact with Saul of Caifanes, a relationship that was fractured for over 15 years, and eventually led to their reunion which included a Coachella appearance this year.  Check out the article and video below.

I can’t believe that was a year ago. In some ways that week feels like it happened in another lifetime.

It’s good to be home

So we’ve been taking it easy for the last few weeks and it has been really nice to be home.   I never understood this before, but it is way easier to write at home so I’ve been cranking out song after song.  Some of them I am really excited about.   I’ve been listening to a ton of music, cooking a bunch of food, swimming and drinking. Pretty awesome.

First of all we want to say thanks to everyone who came out and supported us at our home town shows in June. Special thanks to our brothers  Diego Chi and Andres Chaurand for sitting in with us at KC Live!.  Also thanks to our horn section, Aaron Linshield and Drew Williams.  When they kicked in the riff on “La Murga de Panama” it was pure bliss.   It was the beginning of the Making Movies Orquesta and there will be more to come very soon.

There are tons of new hometown shows in our TOUR section.  We will be in KC until October when when we hit the road again but while we are home we will get to play with Velorio (our friends from California), Los LobosMolotov and Kanrocksas.  It’s going to be great!
